Essential Oils in Electric Humidifier Diffusers - Using Them Safely Around Pets

Please be aware that certain essential oils can be toxic to cats, dogs, and other pets, and should not be used in electric diffusers when you have pets in the home.

Birds - Please note that all essential oils are potentially toxic to birds. NO essential oils should be used if the home has birds in.
Fish - It is also not advisable to use any essential oils around fish.

Essential Oils which are reportedly toxic to Cats and Dogs (should not be used)
  • Teatree
  • Cinnamon
  • Citrus
  • Ylang Ylang
  • Pine
  • Pennyroyal
  • Sweet Birch
  • Wintergreen
  • Eucalyptus
Lavender Oil and Peppermint Oil are reportedly non-toxic to Dogs, but are toxic to Cats.

Cedarwood, Lemongrass and Rosemary Essential Oils are reportedly safe for use with Cats.

Please note that even when using non-toxic essential oils around pets, there are important considerations to make:
  1. The oil should be of high purity / good quality.
  2. Oils should be added to the pool of water in small increments (a few drops at a time), and should be heavily diluted before operating an electric diffuser around cats/dogs.
  3. Raw or undiluted essential oils can be extremely toxic to cats and dogs if ingested or if they come into direct skin contact. Droplets of spilled oil must be wiped up immediately and bottle of undiluted oil kept safely out of reach of pets.
  4. Even when using essential oils which are non-toxic, electric diffusers should only be used for short periods when pets are in the home, and should be placed in a well ventilated area.
  5. Pets should have an easy escape route and should be able to retreat away from the mist-affected area, to a separate and sealed room, if they wish to do so.
  6. If in doubt, cease using electric essential oil diffusers around pets and seek veterinary attention.
